Write down the delivered price
Start with the live item price, then add shipping, taxes, required memberships, handling fees, installation, and mandatory accessories. For store pickup, include meaningful travel cost and time. If a rebate is uncertain or delayed, show it separately rather than reducing today’s cost.
Compare the right alternative
The alternative may be a smaller model, a previous generation, a rental, a repair, or buying nothing yet. Compare the deal with the least expensive option that genuinely meets the need. MSRP is rarely the only relevant benchmark.
Price the restrictions
Final-sale terms, short return windows, marketplace sellers, missing manufacturer coverage, and pickup-only stock all change the value. Restrictions do not automatically make a purchase bad, but they require enough savings to justify the added risk and inconvenience.
- Exact product match.
- Delivered cost.
- Best credible alternative.
- Return and warranty terms.
- Purchase deadline based on evidence, not a timer alone.
Use a one-sentence verdict
Finish with one sentence: “This is worth buying now because...” If the sentence depends mainly on the claimed percentage or fear of missing out, pause. A strong deal remains understandable after the promotional language is removed.
Include the first year, not just checkout
Some products create predictable costs shortly after purchase. Filters, bags, ink, batteries, subscriptions, mounting hardware, fuel, maintenance, and proprietary accessories can reverse a small upfront advantage. Estimate the first year of normal use when those costs differ meaningfully between alternatives.
Time also has value when an offer adds a difficult pickup, uncertain rebate, complicated return, or hours of troubleshooting. You do not need to assign an exact hourly rate. Simply name the burden and decide whether the savings are large enough to accept it.
| Cost | Deal option | Best alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Delivered checkout total | $____ | $____ |
| Required accessories | $____ | $____ |
| First-year consumables | $____ | $____ |
| Restrictions or inconvenience | Describe | Describe |
| Realistic first-year total | $____ | $____ |
Know when waiting is the alternative
Buying nothing today is a valid comparison when the need is not urgent. Record what would trigger a purchase, such as a verified price threshold, project date, failure of current equipment, or availability of a better-supported model. This replaces vague waiting with a decision rule.
If the offer disappears before it meets the rule, that is useful information rather than a loss. Another promotion will be judged against the same needs and costs instead of being treated as an emergency.
